Why would a regenerative farm include horses in its grazing system? Here's our reasoning.
Horses have been part of agricultural landscapes for thousands of years. When managed with adaptive grazing principles, they offer unique benefits:
Ecological Benefits:
- Different grazing patterns than ruminants
- Help control certain weed species
- Create varied plant structure in pastures
Practical Benefits:
- Can be used for farm work and transportation
- Lower infrastructure needs than cattle
- Valuable in mixed-species rotation
The key is management. Like any grazing animal, horses can damage land when poorly managed or benefit it when moved frequently across the landscape.
At Wild Type Ranch, we're integrating horses into our overall grazing plan, moving them in concert with sheep and cattle to maximize the regenerative impact on our soils.
