After months of planning, we've begun implementing equine adaptive grazing at Wild Type Ranch. Here's what we've learned so far.
Horses and other equines can be valuable tools in a regenerative grazing system when managed properly. Unlike cattle, horses graze more selectively and can help manage certain plant species.
Key learnings from our implementation:
What's working well:
- Horses are excellent at grazing down tall, stemmy growth
- They integrate well with our sheep rotation
- Virtual fencing technology works effectively with horses
Challenges we've faced:
- Horses require different mineral supplementation
- They're more sensitive to certain plants
- Hoof impact requires careful monitoring
We're continuing to refine our approach based on what we observe in the pastures. The goal is always to improve soil health while maintaining animal welfare.
Nourish your body, heal the soil!
